Founder vs Leader
We often assume that because someone started a company that by default they should lead the company. This isn’t always the case. There are many shades of what makes a great leader, but I tend to look at these three areas when assessing a strong leader:
Are people naturally attracted to this individual? Are they charismatic, inspirational, upbeat? Would I follow this person into battle? Am I sold on their vision and passion?
If they are condescending and deflating the answer is an instant NO.
Are they progressive or status-quo? Is this person capable of adapting and incorporating new ideas that may not be their own?
If they believe themselves to be the smartest person in the room, proceed with caution.
Does this person seek to make the team better? Are they looking to share knowledge and raise the sophistication level of the team OR are they a closed book, operating below the radar and in the shadows?
The goal is always to multiply greatness in an effort to increase the capacity of the team.
Whether investing in or joining new company, run the leader through this test and determine if this venture is worth your time.
