Just because there is a gap in the market does not mean there is a market in the gap.
For example, there may be a gap in the market for breakfast salads. Why are they only for lunch and dinner? But we may come to find out that the market doesn’t want sausage, scrambled eggs and lettuce first thing in the morning.
This happens often in tech, where countless resources are poured into building a piece of code only to go hunting for market adoption once the dang thing is launched.
More often than not we find ourselves competing in a world of hyper saturation. Does the world really need another (fill in the blank)? No, but that doesn’t mean new (fill in the blank) won’t keep popping up. This game is an uphill battle rarely won.
The holy grail is a ripe gap in the market coupled with high demand, but this isn’t easy to find, otherwise everyone would. We could all use a discerning eye, a bit of wisdom and some self-control to see a market for what it is.
It takes a special visionary type to spot the market and the demand before they exist, for example, Steve Jobs and the i(Everything). Maybe that’s you. In which case I say Godspeed. If it’s not, make sure you’re minding the gap.
