If we were creating an acronym for the word Leader it’s possible the “L” would stand for “Lonely”.
Leaders tend to keep their fears and anxieties close to the vest. Sharing doubts, uncertainties or second guessing decisions can cause wide-spread panic amongst the troops and lead toward members jumping ship (aka pass around their resumes). Leaders often find it hard to confide in friends and family and exposing weakness is always a hard pill to swallow.
Yes - It is lonely at the top, however society needs leaders to breathe that rarified air, take the reins and do what leaders do - challenge the status quo, set the vision and inspire others to charge up the mountain in unison.
Leaders are the representation of a promise that together, with courage and dedication we can will succeed. Leaders should not represent the lone-wolf who is forging alone in the cold dark night capable of doing it all on their own. There is no glory in that.
One of the smartest things you can do as a leader is build a brain trust of advisors that can challenge you while providing perspective and encouragement (and a little tough love).
It’s been said - “if you want to go fast, go alone; if you want to go far, go together.”
So where are you headed and who’s coming with you?
