Pull Back, Shoot Forward
I believe it was the great Les Brown who once said, "Life is like a bow and arrow, sometimes you need to pull back in order to shoot forward".
The message in these modern times is to push and grind, then push some more and grind some more. Guys like Gary Vaynerchuck and Grant Cardone have built cult-like followings around the message of rising and grinding. For the record I too am a fan of the grind. However, I believe that what Les was describing was more along the lines of taking a moment to pull back, re-asses and re-evaluate your current state of affairs. As Jordan Belfort said, "See things as they are, not worse than they are". Through this process you can redefine who you are. It may be that you're completely on track or that you're climbing the wrong ladder. It may be you have no clue what you're doing because you've been acting out of fear or obligation and never really took a moment for self-exploration. Caution: pushing up against the wall can keep you blind and trapped if you're not careful.
In a world of bigger, better, faster you will need to give yourself the permission to pull back so you can shoot forward.
