The S-Myth
Michael Gerber, the famous author of the business classic The E-Myth stated that entrepreneurs get into business because they are generally good at "doing" a specific task. He further states that these entrepreneurs fail at business because although they are good at "doing the thing" (i.e. fixing cars, designing logos, baking cakes), they are bad at running a business which requires a specific skill set. In the E-myth the "E" stands for entrepreneur. The myth being that entrepreneurs only need to be good at doing the core work. Michael Gerber explains in his book a step-by-step approach towards systematically building a business that runs without the entrepreneur working "in" the business so they can focus their work "on" the business. The e-myth is correct, but there is also another myth which I'll call the "S-myth".
In the S-Myth the "S" stands for solo. You may have heard the phrase "solo-preneur" which refers to a person who not only runs their own business but is also the only employee of the business. I have yet to see a highly successful business operate with just one employee. There is a myth that you will become highly successful all by yourself where you don't have overhead, employees, infrastructure or responsibilities. In this dream world you're selling hand over fist from an island with a laptop and a cocktail. If your end goal is to be by yourself and work by yourself then you may want to reassess your goals.
The S-Myth is a myth because it takes a village to make a successful business. Collective brainpower and energy makes a big difference on the day-to-day running of a business. You need people smarter than yourself contributing to the business. If your business is thriving you should seek to help as many people as possible including those in the business, not just the customers but also the suppliers, vendors, partners, shareholders, etc. This is not to say that you need to be enormous or that you need to throw yourself into debt. There is a lot to be said about remaining lean and mean. There are plenty of online businesses that absolutely kill it with a small team. Just keep in mind that no man/woman is an island and in order to reach the top you will need sharp teammates moving in unison with you toward a common goal.
If you really want to go at it all alone I would challenge you to ask yourself why.
