The Pebble Exercise
Yesterday I went through a quick exercise with my kids. This was in response to one of my boys saying he wanted to become a famous Youtuber (yes, this is a thing). I asked what's famous? He said a lot of people watching his videos. I asked - what's a lot of people? He didn't have an answer.
I then proceeded to the following exercise... I drew a target. I went outside and placed it on the ground. I went inside and told my kids to shut their eyes tight then walk outside. I handed them each a small pebble. I then told them to throw the rock and hit the target. They threw their pebbles in random directions. I then told them to open their eyes. I then asked them if they can clearly see the target which was a few feet in front of them. They nodded yes. I then handed them another pebble and said now hit the target. Which they easily did.
The point I made is that if they don't see a target (or set a goal), then the chances of hitting a goal (that was never set in the first place) is like throwing a pebble at a target with your eyes closed. However, once you can see the goal, hitting it becomes that much easier.
Can you clearly see your target?
