Can't Or Won't
If you CAN’T do something it’s most likely that you lack the technical expertise or you might be flat out incapable. For example, currently, I’m incapable of playing The Entertainer note for note. BUT, with practice, training and commitment I could play it… eventually.
However, if I simply WON’T play “The Entertainer” it's likely due to a lack of motivation. To solve this, I can be incentivized with things that matter most to me or are highly enticing.
Does this conversation sound familiar?
Father: Son, I expect you to get straight A’s this year
Son: Dad, I’ve never gotten anything but straight C’s for the last 10 years
Father: I’ll buy you a car if you get straight A’s
Son: Can I choose the car?
Therefore… to motivate your people effectively, you must first determine if the issue is one of ability (can't) or willingness (won't), and then address it accordingly.
Poll Results: The results are in from last week’s survey:
50% of voters are are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in their industry
