Need to be Needed
If your business ceased to exist today, would “they” miss you?
I’m pretty sure at this point we’d all miss Uber.
I’d definitely miss my local coffee shop.
I’d be unphased if we lost Burger King but definitely affected if we lost In-N-Out.
I’m 50/50 on Amazon but certain I’d miss my local surf/skate shop.
Thus, we must ask ourselves this difficult question when it comes to our business. Will the customer miss us if we cease to exist? How easily could we be replaced, whether by competition or technology? Is our answer rooted in blind arrogance or are we certain we’re needed?
We need to be absolutely certain on who we serve. The one size fits all models of the past don’t work well in this hyper-fragmented new world of ours. Mass marketing has been taken over by targeted niche audience segmenting and messaging. The generalist is now fighting for market share against the specialist.
One thing is certain… If you want to be missed, you need to be needed. And you can only “need to be needed” when your value proposition is unique and truly your own.
