Remote Work - The Saga Continues
The future of remote workers is a topic that fascinates me.
The primary reason for leaving the office was a legitimate concern for life. Seemingly, we’re not as concerned about dying from the pandemic as we once were.
Yet, a large portion of the workforce has no plans of returning back to their cubicles or sitting in rush hour traffic to make it home in time for dinner and ballet / baseball practice.
Granted, life in the office was no cake walk. Constant interruptions from co-workers. The extra burden of rent. Parking!
The problems we face now are Employee Isolation and Disengagement, Communication Barriers, Technology/Connectivity Issues, Monitoring/Accountability… oh and let’s not forget Maintaining Work-Life Balance, especially when kids, dogs, neighbors and the fridge are in such close proximity.
Here’s a good question: In 10 years, will more OR less of your workforce be in the office?
The management consultant in me wants to create a model with a weighted average to determine how each stakeholder affects the overall decision as to whether or not one should return to the office. The stakeholders in this scenario would be Board of Directors, C-Suite, Employees, Investors, Strategic Partners and of course the Customer.
Here’s some interesting poll results which I believe start to form a narrative:
Poll results from last week’s survey shows that 69% of voters would prefer to hire an in-house team (assuming there was no difference in price).
In November’s survey, 50% of voters said they prefer to do business with someone they’ve met in person.
Lastly, in December’s poll, 69% of voters said their biggest challenge this year is “Managing Growth”.
I’ll be continuing to explore this topic throughout the year. My prediction is that in one form or another, we humans will find opportunities to connect with each other more, vs finding more excuses/reasons to remain apart (valid or not).
Just remember our job as business owners is to create an excellent experience for everyone who interacts with us, whether customer or employee.
